A door opens. A space is opened. A sound space that opens into another and another, in almost labyrinthine branches. But we do not lose our way. There is a thread for us to follow. What we hear makes us dance and think. Turbulent dance of ideas. Memories and recollections. On the trail of sound with Pierre Favre. The percussionist as poet, the drummer as sound painter, the composer as storyteller, and the improviser as artist of survival.

What he writes for the Arte Quartett is like a choral fantasy, a suite for individualists with a strong collective spirit. Four singers, each with their own utterly unique timbre, a chamber choir with a highly developed sonic sensuality. The percussionist runs his threads between the voices, becomes one himself, creates space, provides the beat, or drives everything onward. Carefully and decisively. With a sensitivity based on inner strength.

In a solo piece, too, Favre fragments sound into ingenious character studies. A seemingly archaic dimension of drumming is here, as well as the ethereal sound of distant, unknown worlds approaching us, then disappearing. Solid craftsmanship recalls the tambour tradition; an exemplary approach to materials, moving through the acoustic medium to sounds that seem electronic, transforming the workshop into a laboratory.

And then there is Michel Godard, the deep peer, the free spirit with the metallic tuba and the wooden serpent that magnificently mixes with the saxophone voices or unfolds as counterpoint singing. In the duet with Favre, the tuba player almost becomes an improvising drummer. The drummer and percussionist becomes the shaper of sonic and rhythmic complexity. Favre's compositions emerge from this feeling for the orchestral, for the cooperation and conflict of voices.

He has the courage to play melody. That is one reason why his music is so moving. His compositions do not exclude the past. He integrates it (and in this he also has affinities with Michel Godard) in a reflective, sublimating way. Many things flow into this: his attention to other cultures and to deeper layers of our own tradition. Nothing lies on the surface; the whole sets off sparks in the dark. Making light breathe in a space.

For breathing is important in this music, metaphorically as well as literally, physically. Breath and movement. With his sense for exciting drama, Favre has drawn a path through these spaces. At the same time, he gives those who play with him and those of us who listen to him the freedom to find our way through these acoustic environments.

Astonished, we stand in singing unknowns, fascinated amid the bubbling variety, torn between the sound of the earth and the sounds of the air currents high over our heads. Until we follow the musicians, who form a procession, to celebrate life together.
