These days we’re awash in freely improvised recordings, most of which pale compared to the experience of witnessing such a performance in the flesh. Saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and drummer Tom Rainey have spent years working together (and living together, as a married couple), and they long ago achieved a connection that makes their spontaneous music feel extraordinary — not exactly composed, but with such intuition that it doesn’t feel instantaneous. They first played with bassist Brandon Lopez in 2017 and the rapport was strong enough that they’ve continued working together. This debut album proves their instincts right. Lopez is a phenomenally talented bassist who shows off his ferocity a bit too often, but here he sounds incredible, applying his muscular attack to go well beyond what we might expect from a bassist. He has a simpatico partner in Rainey, an innately swinging drummer who can maintain pulse while making sounds that rumble, scrape, punch, and thwack. Together they give Laubrock’s rangy improvisational gifts a multi-directional, 3-D foundation. The bassist has absorbed plenty of lessons from William Parker, but apart from a shared sense of propulsion, Lopez has fully escaped that shadow here. It’s a knockout from start to finish.

Som mange av være lesere vil ha lagt merke til, er den tyske, nå Brooklyn-bosatte, saksofonisten Ingerid Laubrock en musiker vi liker. I mange år, helt siden hennes tid i London på begynnelsen av 2000-tallet og fram til nå, har vi fulgt hennes utvikling som musiker, som har beveget seg fra det mer brasilianske til relativt fritt, improvisert musikk som de senere årene har vært med på å prege jazzen fra Brooklyn. Trommeslageren Tom Rainey regnes som en av de mest pålitelige, stødige og spennende trommeslagerne fra Brooklun-miljøet, som både har utgitt plater i eget navn, og samarbeidet med musikere som Simon Nabatov og Nils Wogram, Ralph Alessi, Kris Davis, Ray Anderson, Tim Berne, Nels Cline og en rekke andre.

Langsam - James Brandon Lewis ist Saxofonist und mit seinen drei Intakt-Alben für nicht wenige der Darling des Jahres. BRANDON LOPEZ ist Bassist, windkanal-getestet durch Perelman, Wooley, Swell, Dikeman, Rempis, Steve Bachzkowski, gestählt durch Drummer wie Gerald Cleaver, Weasel Walter, Onno Govaert, Chris Corsano, PNL, und mit „Live at Roulette“ und „RED (db)“ auf Relative Pitch einer, der mir letztes Jahr die Augenbrauen hochzog. Als Hänfling mit puerto-ricanischem Background, aber den Muckis, alles aus dem Bass zu wringen und zu kratzen, was in ihm steckt.

Saxofoniste Ingrid Laubrock en drummer Tom Rainey werken al lang samen als duo en als trio met gitariste Mary Halvorson en met het quartet Anti-Hause en in diverse andere constellaties. Laubrock komt oorspronkelijk uit Duitsland maar sinds 2009 is Brooklyn haar uitvalsbasis. Rainey komt uit Los Angeles maar woont en werkt inmiddels ook in New York. Brandon Lopez (1968), ook New Yorker komt oorspronkelijk uit Puerto Rico, hij werkte al met Dave Liebman, Zeena Parks en John Zorn, hij komt dus ook uit de avant- garde scene evenals Laubrock en Rainey. Hun samenwerking ontstond eigenlijk bij toeval, bij hun eerste optreden op een dinsdagavond, 11 april 2017 in de achterkamer van muziekbar Barbés in Brooklyn, bleek vanaf de eerste noot de chemie tussen hen te kloppen. Ze besloten ter plekke om verder samen te werken en het Lopez- Laubrock- Rainey Trio was geboren. Meerdere optredens volgden en uiteindelijk heeft het geleid tot het onderhavige album, het is duidelijk dat ze op dezelfde golflengte zitten en het lijkt erop dat de toevoeging van Lopez aan het al lang bestaande duo Laubrock - Rainey een nieuwe injectie heeft gegeven aan de toch al grote zeggingskracht van hun muziek. In de studio sprongen de vonken onmiddellijk over en weer en de muzikale interactie functioneerde zonder afspraken of plannen. Alleen intuïtief ontwikkelde zich een verbazingwekkend muzikaal proces. Het leek wel alsof de drie elkaar net hadden ontmoet om te improviseren en elke keer opnieuw was daar dezelfde magie.

Se permettete parliamo di rifondazione melodica. O del lirismo. Melodia alla lettera altro non è che la successione di suoni in orizzontale. Ma da tempo il termine è associato a qualcosa di suggestivo e chiaro da recepire. In un contesto in cui lirismo e radicalità si fondono in un andamento rizomatico, il trio formato da Ingrid Laubrock (sassofoni), Brandon Lopez (contrabbasso) e Tom Rainey (batteria) nell’immenso album intitolato No es la Playa (Intakt) fa proprio questo: rifonda la melodia. Esemplare a questo proposito è la title track. L’idea della ballad con una parte tematica «aperta» (tendenzialmente atonale) di bellezza superlativa vi è omaggiata, amata, decostruita.

Quanto al tandem di vita e d’arte Tom Rainey – Ingrid Laubrock, riteniamo di averne seguito ed apprezzato già numerose quanto svariate esternazioni, da oltre un quindicennio spese anche al di fuori della pulsante scena newyorkese, e non soltanto entro le differenziate formazioni capitanate dall’uno o dall’altra: insomma dei due si è capitalizzata quanto meno l’intensa motivazione testimoniale al corrente filone avant-jazz. Fatta salva l’eccellenza del profilo dei più ricorrenti partner (in testa Mary Halvorson, Ralph Alessi, Drew Gress o Kris Davis, ma non solo!) un forte elemento di curiosità sarà conferito dalla triangolazione con il celebrato contrabbassista di radici portoricane Brandon Lopez, palesatasi in un recente meeting a Brooklyn, presso il club Barbès, ‘onorato’ da una platea concentrata anzi ristretta (non più di dieci presenze – e non erano tempi di Coronavirus, ma l’accadimento di un pubblico super-selezionato è evenienza verso cui hanno sviluppato anticorpi anche ‘grandi nomi’ da entrambe le sponde d’Atlantico).

'So fühlt sich das bei mir auch an, wenn ich frei spiele. Es gibt natürlich die- ses ästhetische Kompositionsgefühl, das man in sich trägt. Aber wenn man frei spielt, denkt man nicht so viel. Die Reaktion auf das, was man hört, geht sehr, sehr schnell.' Viel zu schnell, um zu denken - die Kompositionsästhetik ist also her gefühlt als gedacht. Two international saxophonists who have relocated to New York show here that creative sounds from a bass-drum trio can reach decisive points coming from diverse directions. Interestingly enough on her debut disc it’s Argentinean tenor saxophonist Julieta Eugenio who lists towards the mainstream. Someone who has studied Jazz at the advanced level since her move to New York in 2013, her interpretations here are backed by bassist Matt Dwonszyk and drummer Jonathan Barber, who work together in other bands and have backed Oleg Butman and Jimmy Greene. Meanwhile German tenor and soprano saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, who has been stateside since 2008 and has been recording since 1998, is more adventurous in her program, Her associates are bassist Brandon Lopez, who has recorded with Ivo Perelman among others and drummer Tom Rainey, who has backed a multitude of sound explorers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Les multiples collaborations, dans divers contextes (dont le duo) entre Ingrid Laubrock et Tom Rainey, ont aussi débouché voici quelques années sur un premier trio, en concert, avec Brandon Lopez. Ce disque concrétise la fructueuse pertinence de cette rencontre. Après un début rêveur et méditatif, qui nous révèle une fois de plus l'étendue de la palette de la saxophoniste, la même plage s'épanouit en libre cavalcade et trilogue effervescent. Et cette connivence va trouver au fil des plages une foule d'expressions différentes, mettant à profit toutes les singularités des protagonistes pour une véritable œuvre collective. Ça bouge, ça vit, ça s'interpelle, et ça nous interpelle, nous qui sommes auditeurs (et presque spectateurs) de cette cérémonie secrète qui mêle transgression des codes et adhésion sans faille à tous les sortilèges de la musique. C'est fascinant, puissant, et riche de toutes les métamorphoses. Le cinquième titre nous embarque dans une sorte de périple abstrait, dont l'abstraction semble feinte, car la sensualité des sons, leur richesse timbrale, convoque simultanément une espèce de chaleur organique, comme une ode à la musique incarnée, au sens propre, une musique qui prend chair. Et cela se conclut dans l'ultime plage par une folle explosion. Magnifique!

Es ist nicht der Strand »Es ist nicht der Strand, sondern in Ozean voller Melodien und Rhythmen. Alles improvisiert. Jedoch git es wohl wenige Musikerinnen wie Ingrid Laubrock, die die Kunst beherrschen, im Moment zu komponieren bzw. eine Improvisation so zu gestalten, dass sie Struktur und Tiefe hat. Mit Tom Rainey und Brandon Lopez gesellt sich eine Rhythmusgruppe dazu, die in der Lage ist, das mitzugehen und selbst auch Verantwortung zu übernehmen.
