As Things Do, the sophomore album of the Elusion Quartet underscores the reputation as a masterful creative bassist and visionary composer of its leader, Michael Formanek. His group is made of excellent improvisers and bandleaders - saxophonist Tony Malaby, pianist Kris Davis and drummer Ches Smith - who commit to Formanek’s ideas across the music with optimal acuity.

Michael Formanek (V.S, 1958) behoort tot de vooraanstaande groep jazzbassisten/componisten in de moderne jazz. Hij begeleidde jazzmusici als Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Dave Liebman en Fred Hersch e.v.a. In 1990 verscheen zijn eerste album onder eigen naam, hij werkte vaak samen met een ander fenomeen uit de free jazz Tim Berne.

Not easy, following Michael Formanek’s last longtime quartet, where he, Craig Taborn and Gerald Cleaver sailed through intricate metrical schemes as Tim Berne keened and surged on the rolling sea. One doesn’t often link Berne and Johnny Hodges, but both altos really know how to connect one note to the next, suavely rounding a phrase. The action is a little scrappier in the bassist’s Elusion Quartet on its second album recorded late in 2022. We open (“Bury the Lede”) with a minute-and-a-half full-band held-chord tremble, Tony Malaby using saxophone as a resonating pipe. Later his tenor evokes the anthemic ancestors, as the quartet get within shouting distance of full modal churning – it’s in 4, with what sounds like one splashy chord change per bar. Kris Davis can hammer chrome piano harmony but doesn’t go full fourths-and-fifths McCoy Tyner. Ches Smith’s accents add another polyrhythmic layer, where in such a context another drummer might thrash.

But it’s when the quartet of double bassist Formanek, saxophonist Tony Malaby, pianist Kris Davis, and drummer-vibraphonist Ches Smith come together in a way that brings the entire picture into focus, revealing the collective totality of their ideas, that delivers the most thrilling moments.

Ce qui marque d’abord, à l’écoute de ce nouvel album de Michael Formanek, c’est la constance. Le contrebassiste mène depuis des années une barque discrète au premier abord, mais qui s’affirme parmi les mécaniques les plus précises de sa génération. On se souvient qu’en 2019, lorsque Formanek avait présenté son Elusion Quartet, l’impression était à l’exploration de l’infiniment petit ; avec la même équipe, et notamment un Tony Malaby de feu, on perçoit dès « Bury The Lede » que les choses ont grossi : le saxophone est colérique, impétueux, le piano de Kris Davis est une percussion supplémentaire qui vient compléter l’arsenal de Ches Smith. Ce qui est en jeu dans ce As Things Do, c’est une forme d’entropie. De vivacité jamais démentie.

With his membership of the fine collaborative trio Thumbscrew as well as string of leader gigs in various configurations for ECM, double bassist Michael Formanek can lay rightful claim to notable status in contemporary improvised music. He has long made music in which form is strongly defined without confining his bands and this new offering by his Elusion Quartet, a supergroup of sorts, given that each member is also a well established composer-leader, builds strongly on its impressive 2018 debut Time Like This.

Saxophonist Tony Malaby has been a hard-hitting presence on the NYC scene for more than a quarter of a century. Although an MVP whose unique sound elevates any bandstand he graces, as shown with the likes of Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band and the Fred Hersch Quintet, he's also an established leader. But while a fearsome improviser whose own albums often swerve to left field, he remains a wholly committed interpreter of other people's concepts, as he shows on the three dates here.
