A Brooklyn cosmopolitan uniquely absorbs the legacy of a beloved saxophonist It consists of two songs each by Ornette Coleman and Dewey Redman, two of Talmer's heroes, as well as variations on excavated songs by the former and his own compositions. It has a different feel than just a songbook or a tribute work, and gives the impression that many years of research have come to fruition here. Based on the members of his own trio and sextet, with unique musicians coming and going, the core elements that form Thalmer's musicality, including Lee Konitz, are developed. Hij studeerde klassieke piano aan het Conservatoire Populaire de Genève, hij kan componeren voor symfonie orkesten en hij kan dirigeren, maar hij koos voor de saxofoon en de jazz. De saxofoon ontdekte hij op de highschool in Florida (!).

Der Tenorsaxophonist Ohad Talmor hat sich ein umfangreiches Werk vorgenommen, seine Dop-pel-CD umfasst eine intensive Beschäftigung mit den Kompositionen seiner Vorbilder Ornette Coleman und Dewey Redman, teilweise waren die Werke sogar bis dato unreleased. So sind also nicht nur neue Sichtweisen auf die Œuvres zu hören, sondern es gibt auch wirklich Neues zu entdecken. Ohad Talmor spielt sich mit gros-sem, ausdrucksvollem Ton durch die Werke, die er kongenial in verschiedenen Besetzungen vor-trägt. Seine Triobesetzung mit Bassist Chris Tordini und Schlagzeuger Eric McPherson wird durch Gäste erweitert, so kommen Vibraphonist Joel Ross, die Trompeter Shane Endsley und Russ Johnson, Pianist Leo Genovese oder der Harmonikaspieler Gregoire Maret dazu und fügen sich wunderbar in das Bandgefüge ein. Auf der zweiten CD wird die Band zudem um Moog und Sound Programming ausgedehnt, die künstlichen Sounds passen sich jedoch wunderbar in den akustischen Grundsound ein. Load 'em up and play 'em. That's kind of how it's going these days, with so many interesting new recordings making their way to the show. Ohad Talmor's Ornette Coleman-inspired Back To The Land is already showing up on best-of-lists. He came across some unreleased rehearsal recordings by Ornette & Lee Konitz in Konitz's apartment after he passed awsy, and that's the music that is the basis of his new album. (Note: release date of the Talmor release is pending.) Myra Melford's Fire & Water Quintet drew considerable praise for their debut album last year, and their second, Hear The Light Singing, might be even better. Saxophonist/poet Roy Nathanson's 82 Days recreates some of the music he played from his balcony for 82 straight days of pandemic lock-down, while Slovenian pianist Miha Gantar returns with another 5-cd release for Clean Feed, less than a year before an earlier 5-disc release. There's also new music from Norwegian quartet I.P.A., Peter Brötzmann with drummer Sabu Toyozumi, Cene Resnik & the Acamar Trio from Slovenia, and more and more. Back to the Land chronicles a journey into a rare fortune. American tenor sax player-composer-educator Ohad Talmor (and drummer George Schuller) discovered three DAT tapes in the personal collection of his mentor, the late sax legend Lee Konitz, a dear friend and father figure for Tlamor for over 30 years. These tapes documented rehearsals at Ornette Coleman’s loft in May 1998, with like-minded legends – double bass player Charlie Haden and drummer Billy Higgins, playing new music that Ornette had just written for an upcoming concert at the Umbria Jazz Festival. You could hear the three musicians playing, stopping, and talking about women and reeds. This trio played Coleman’s new music only at the Umbria Jazz Festival, and none of these new compositions was published.

However, the story behind Ohad Talmor’s latest project, “Back to the Land,” releasing on Intakt Records this Friday, is particularly compelling. Despite a year-long delay due to licensing issues and the news reaching us too late for a comprehensive review, we felt this release deserved attention. The fascinating backstory of “Back to the Land” makes it a project that’s difficult to overlook, even if we can’t provide our usual in-depth coverage.

To były trzy taśmy z nagraniami prób Ornette’a Colemana i Lee Konitza, które nigdy wcześniej nie były publikowane.

We should be grateful for Ohad Talmor’s wide-ranging curiosity, not only because of the detective work he put into the Ornette Coleman/Lee Konitz recordings, but because of his uniquely varied presentations of these mostly unknown pieces. Ohad Talmor, Back to the Land (2 CDs, Intakt Records) Born in 1970 and raised in Geneva, the peripatetic saxophonist Ohad Talmor attended high school in the United States and subsequently studied musicology at the University of Geneva. He is best known in this country for his recordings with Steve Swallow and for his many enterprising collaborations with his mentor, Lee Konitz: these include big band arrangements, small groups, and his writing/arranging for the session that became Konitz’s New Nonet. The pair were nothing if not ambitious: I’ve just listened to Lee Konitz and the Axis String Quartet Play French Impressionist Music from the 20th Century. Talmor did the arrangements (and some of the composing) in these treatments of pieces by Debussy, Ravel, and Fauré. Konitz was indirectly the inspiration for Talmor’s two-CD collection Back to the Land.

Though unmentioned in the liner notes or anywhere else in the CD package, the core of the repertoire on this album from tenor saxophonist Ohad Talmor comes from his transcriptions of a 1998 Ornette Coleman rehearsal tape with his long-time colleagues Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins, along with fellow altoist Lee Konitz, as they prepared for a single performance later that year at the Umbria Jazz Festival. While the release contains some well-known themes from Coleman and sometime frontline partner Dewey Redman, the bulk of these 24 pieces are variations Talmor created on the tunes on the tape.

Auf seinem jüngsten Doppelalbum geht der Weltbür-ger, der 1970 als Israeli in Lyon geboren wurde, in Genf aufwuchs und seit 1995 in New York lebt, von bisher unveröffentlichten Kompositionen Or-nette Colemans aus. Sie fanden sich auf drei Bändern mit Probeaufnahmen von Coleman mit Lee Konitz. Die beiden Giganten spielten die Stücke dann im Sommer 1998 auf Tournee in Europa; danach gerieten sie in Vergessenheit. Coleman starb 2015, Konitz 2020. Talmor hat die Kompositionen nun transkribiert und um eigene Variationen und Stücke erweitert; hinzu kommen noch «Mushi Mushi» und «Dewey's Tune» von Dewey Redman, Talmors Saxofonleh-rer. Colemans Entwürfe trugen noch keine Titel; auch bei Tal-mor haben sie bloß Nummern.
