Irène Schweizer is the great personality of European jazz. The pianist has shaped the international jazz scene as well as the Swiss music landscape with her countless live concerts and her recorded work on over 75 CD’s. In 2018, she was awarded the Swiss Grand Prix Music, endowed with 100,000 Swiss francs. Her musical path leads from the swing and bebop of her beginnings to liberation in the free avant-garde and to forms of contemporary jazz – from London's Ronnie Scott's jazz club and Zurich's Africana Club to the avant-garde stages in Wuppertal, Berlin, Willisau, Chicago, New York and Zurich.

IRÈNE SCHWEIZER (Jun. 2, 1941 - Jul. 16, 2024) Cofounder of Intakt Records and the Taktlos Festival, Schweizer died at age 83 in Zurich, Switzerland after a long illness. A proverbial force of nature, the jazz. pianist helped shape the international jazz scene and Swiss music landscape with over 75 albums since some of her first mid-to-late '60s recordings, including Pierre Favre's Santana (Pip, 1968) and Manfred Schoof's European Echoes (FMP, 1969). She was an activist, fighting for artistic autonomy and stood up to apartheid and for women's rights, including lesbian issues and gender fluidity.

Der 1. August steht vor der Tür, und der ganze Kulturbund hat sich festlich herausgeputzt. Auch hier soll es ein bisschen patriotisch zugehen. Nach einem Thema muss ich nicht lange suchen. Il 16 luglio, a Zurigo, la sua città, è mancata Irene Schweizer: era malata e purtroppo già da tempo non suonava più. Le rendiamo omaggio con un florilegio di suoi brani e ricordando la grande importanza che sotto diversi aspetti Irene Schweizer ha avuto: tra i battistrada dell'improvvisazione radicale europea, Schweizer va anche annoverata tra i più interessanti pianisti di jazz - e non solo relativamente al jazz europeo - dagli anni sessanta al nuovo millennio; è stata una pioniera della presenza femminile sulla scena improvvisativa e del nuovo jazz, con un protagonismo di forte impronta femminista; ed è stata una figura di riferimento non solo per il suo contributo musicale ma anche per l'impulso che ha dato ad iniziative come i festival zurighesi Taktlos e Unerhoert, e come l'etichetta svizzera Intakt. Nel 2021, in occasione dei suoi ottant'anni, Jazz Anthology aveva dedicato a Irene Schweizer una serie di tre puntate, che potete trovare in podcast.

Als «kompromisslose Avantgardistin», als «wil- de Frau» ist Irène Schweizer gerne gesehen wor- den – und einige der nun erschienenen Nachrufe, etwa in der «Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung», reduzieren das umfangreiche Werk der Pianistin auf die aktivistische, aber kurze Phase ihres Le- bens. Dabei zeigt selbst ihre frühe Soloplatte aus der Freejazzphase der siebziger Jahre mit dem immer wieder zitierten Titel «Wilde Señoritas» ein immens breites Spektrum. Und je älter Irène Schweizer wurde, desto näher rückte ihr Spiel an die Jazztradition. Irène Schweizer lässt sich nicht einordnen. Sie war, kurz gesagt, eine Jazzpianistin. Und weil – wie ihr Musikerkollege Alexander von Schlippen- bach einst sagte – gilt: «All Jazz is free», eben auch eine Freejazzpianistin.

Sie war, wie der Jazzkritiker Michael Rüsenberg schrieb, eine ”Einzelanfertigung”. Und in der Tat: So wie Irène Schweizer spielte weltweit kaum eine andere Musikerin. Die renommierte Schweizer Pianistin gehörte seit den Sechzigerjahren zu den wichtigsten Exponentinnen des europäischen Freejazz und der frei improvisierten Musik. Am 16. Juli ist sie im Alter von 83 Jahren in Zürich gestorben.

イレーネ・シュヴァイツァーが7月16日に亡くなった。1941年6月2日スイス、シャフハウゼン生まれ、享年83。1960年代後半にヨーロッパでも活発化したフリー・ムーヴメントの主役たちの中で紅一点と言っていい存在だった。2021年、80歳の誕生日を迎えた後、健康上の理由からコンサート活動から引退していた。
