TOM RAINEY TRIO FEAT. MARY HALVORSON AND INGRID LAUBROCK
CAMINO CIELO ECHO
Tom Rainey: Drums
Ingrid Laubrock: Saxophone
Mary Halvorson: Guitar
Intakt CD 199 / 2012
Perhaps one of the more important drummers in global improvisation circles, Tom Rainey's discography as a sideman, for example, could read like a history of postmodern jazz, spanning conventional and nonconforming practices. He's a fluid drummer who subdivides the rhythmical element into fragments while tap-dancing across the kit, shaded with lyrical qualities and offbeat digressions, as the list goes on. On this trio date, he aligns with cutting-edge artists Mary Halvorson (guitar) and Ingrid Laubrock (saxophones), for a series of loosely designed improvisational jaunts, where space and counter-maneuvers are but a few of many rewarding attributes evidenced throughout. The trio incorporates several paradigms into the grand schema. In addition, the studio processing helps instill a broad plane as the artists dissect and redesign core themes. Halvorson's distortion techniques and off-the-radar phrasings often generate a reverse-engineering effect, as the lack of a bassist in these instances generate a pristine soundscape where nuances come to light in prominent fashion. But situations come to a head during a few frenzied moments, brimming with angst-ridden breakouts. Rainey peppers a flirtatious theme on "Mr. and Mrs. Mundane treated with Laubrock's popping notes and Halvorson's sinuous voicings as the band throttles the pitch while Rainey's sweeping grooves help widen the overall outlook. In other spots, the trio morphs patchy storylines with minimalist notions, and venture into ethereal territory during "Strada senza nome." However, it's an album brooding with diametric contrasts, evidenced on the scrappy and zestful, "Leapfrog." They also delve into the avant-rock realm on the bursting "Fluster," via the guitarist's fuzz-toned riffs and Rainey's polyrhythmic flurries. As anticipated, the musicians keep the listener on the edge via a recurring element of surprise, where no two works sound intimately alike. It's a testament to the art of improvisation conducted by three musicians who possess idiosyncratic voices, armed with boundless creative proclivities. Rating: Five Stars
For its second outing, drummer Tom Rainey's trio establishes itself as a commanding representative of the latest direction in pioneering jazz. By creating (more like co-creating) music with two of today's in-demand players—guitarist Mary Halvorson and saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock—Rainey continues his streak of outings with vanguard players. The drummer has been heard in cutting-edge bands since the 1990s, led by such esteemed avant-garde players as saxophonists Tim Berne and Tony Malaby, guitarists Nels Cline and David Torn, and bassist Mark Helias. But he is also heard in more traditional settings, playing with the likes of pianists Fred Hersch and Kenny Werner. Camino Cielo Echo follows the trio's debut Pool School (Clean Feed, 2010). What felt like a one-off assembly the first time around, gels here into a solid working ensemble. The session sprouts in various directions, from the noisy thrashing of punk jazz to the almost ambient explorations of minimalism. Rainey spreads the composing duties between the three, but they seem to write with the same voice in mind. If sequencing an album is of any import these days, this disc begins with a statement of purpose. "Expectation Of Exception" picks up momentum, with Rainey applying loose- limb drips and drops of drumming while Laubrock and Halvorson exercise their signature sounds. The guitarist winds through varying pitches and runs that are applied against the saxophonist's breathy extended technique. Halvorson can morph her guitar into a sci-fi synthesizer or effortlessly toss off some Derek Bailey scrambled eggs. Not in the mood for chary music making? The trio tears down the walls on "Mullet Toss," "Two Worlds," and "Fluster"—a thumping kick-drum exercise in shredded guitar and hoots and hollering saxophone. Where the freedom allowed here by Rainey ramps up the energy, it also settles into some very satisfying meditative tracks. The trio's simpatico nature eschews hostility for harmony, creating a new path to group interaction.
The Wire, Nr. 4 / 2012, Great Britain
Tom Rainey's trio with Ingrid Laubrock and Mary Halvorson is very much an integrated ensemble. Laubrock is a saxophonist of unusual textural sensitivity and intellectual savvy, who can summon up proper deposits of abandon, knowing restraint and sly references to jazz' past in the midst of her purely improvisational explorations. Halvorson, one of the important "avant-jazz" guitarists of her generation, takes the abstracting and deconstructionist influence and has come up with her own way of melding that freestyling painterliness with shards of line and sonics. Together, they make a refreshing new and not-sentimental kind of beautiful music.
If one of the prime goals of a leader is to explore new territories while inspiring excellent performance, then drummer Tom Rainey has hit the jackpot. Even though the 13 tracks on his sophomore leadership effort are attributed between the cast, they retain the freshness of improvisations due to their wild unpredictability. That same adventurous ethos also pervaded the trio's justly lauded debut Pool School (Clean Feed, 2010).

All good improvisers have a signature sound, and the best keep evolving to remain fresh. In the absence of compositions, the act of assembling a group creates the ingredients for improv. It's always fun to imagine how a unit might sound based on the individuals within, but the best can surprise with interactions that catalyze past expectations.
If one of the prime goals of a leader is to explore new territories while inspiring excellent performances, then drummer Tom Rainey has hit the jackpot. Even though the 13 tracks on his sophomore effort as a leader are attributed amongst the cast, they retain the freshness of improvisations due to their wild unpredictability. In truth, the composed elements are all but impossible to discern. That same adventurous ethos also pervaded the trio's justly lauded debut, Pool School (Clean Feed, 2010), and this release looks destined to garner similar acclaim.
