Primo album in solo per la giovane pianista svizzera: un bagno rigenerante in acque limpide, dove avventure melodiche mettono subito in chiaro che ci troviamo al cospetto di una musicista importante. Capace di dare nuova linfa a un ambito, il piano solo, dove il rischio di esagerare con retorica e melassa spesso rovina intenzioni e progetti.

Fair warning; James Brandon Lewis is going to be appearing in this column a lot the next few months. He’s got another killer album coming out in March, and at least one notable guest appearance on a record in April. And all of these records are very different from each other, just as the two albums he put out last year, Eye Of I and To Mahalia, With Love, were completely different from each other. Despite the fact that he only plays the tenor saxophone, Lewis changes his approach to suit the circumstance. Sometimes he’s a hard-riffing beast; sometimes he’s an introspective balladeer; sometimes he locks in with the drummer for deep duo explorations; sometimes he ascends into gospelized ecstasy.

Alle grossen Avantgardisten des Jazz, auch die Protagonisten des «Free Jazz», kommen aus einer Tradition: Cecil Taylor bewunderte Duke Ellington, John Coltrane ist in seinen Anfängen ohne Dexter Gordon oder Yusef Lateef so schwer denkbar wie Ornette Coleman ohne Charlie Parker. James Brandon Lewis, geboren 1983 in Buffalo und seit ein paar Jahren der angesagte Tenorsaxophonist der Stunde, ist einer, der das Risiko nicht scheut und gern mal in freie : Passagen ausbricht. Aber er ist auch ein bekennender «Traditionalist», nicht nur im Bezug auf die Neuerer von gestern, sondern, als Sohn eines Pastors, auf den Urgrund spiritueller schwarzer Musik, den Gospel. Auch die profane Basis schwarzer Musik, Blues und Soul, ist in seiner Musik als magmatischer Untergrund präsent. Entsprechend weit ist deren Horizont. Die Intensität und Dringlichkeit seines Tenors steigert sich Oft ins Hymnische. Daneben hat er, ein Abenteurer dynamischer Temperaturstürze, nicht nur eine Vorliebe für komplexe, mal kantige, mal rollende Rhythmik, sondern auch einen Hang zum Lyrischen und Subtilen. James Brandon Lewis ist ein Meister vieler Gemütslagen.

Fast wär mir das JAMES BRANDON LEWIS QUARTET mit Transfiguration (Intakt CD 400) entgangen, und damit neben dem Leader am Tenorsax auch Aruán Ortiz am Piano, Brad Jones am Bass und Chad Taylor an den Drums. Zu noch Ballister (live im w71) in meinem Ohr, einem Trio, das ohne Bass, ohne Piano einem direkt die Synapsen versengt, ist dieses Quartett ein Ausbund an Sophistication. Mit einem Polymath an den Tasten und Lewis als Brainac, der seine Molecular Systematic Music an die biochemische Doppelhelix der DNA rückbindet und daraus eine Predigt über die 'Trinity of Creative Self ableitet. Lewis schwelgt in den sonoren, sanglichen, melodischen und hymnischen Registern seiner Reeds, eingebettet in quirliges Arpeggio, pulsendes Pizzicato und pointillistische Beats.

Es ist eine Linie, von der man in Bezug auf James Brandon Lewis getrost sprechen kann: John Coltrane - Sonny Rollins - David Murray - und nun eben jener 1983 geborene J.B. Lewis. Er kommt vom Gospel, hat somit die afroamerikanische Spiritualität schon als Kind aufgesogen, er hat den Blues im Blut, spielt Funk und Hip Hop und beeindruckt mit seinen archaischen, kompromisslosen Exkursionen durch die Musikgeschichte der letzten mindestens sieben Jahrzehnte. In seinem momentanen Quartett, zu dem der kubanische Pianist Aruan Ortiz gehört, der Bassist Brad Jones und der Schlagzeuger Chad Taylor, hat er ein geniales Sprachrohr für seine dynamischen und komplex strukturierten Kompositionen gefunden. Diese leben von seiner ungewöhnlichen Energie, von ihrer analytischen Form und den dramaturgisch geschickt durchwebten Improvisationsmustern.

In the third and final section of ‘Triptych’, the highlight of this outstanding album James Brandon Lewis’ quartet engages in a few tempo changes. The medium fast beat on which they started comes right down to ballad pace but it is much more than the shift of speed that catches the ear. The players suggest that the notes of the initially fast theme conspire to hang if not freeze in mid air and the effect is enchanting, making what was punchy and rhythmic languorous and melodic.

Lewis’s quartet is typically an outlet for his more nimble compositions, producing harmonically complex backings for his heavy horn phrases. Their fourth album, Transfiguration, is no different, comprising eight tracks of angular yet explosive experimentation.

While his Red Lily Quintet focuses on seldom celebrated aspects of African American history like George Washington Carver’s Jessup Wagons and the midwifing of present-day gospel music by the majestic Mahalia Jackson, his Quartet extends the trajectory of the tenor saxophonist-led quartet still largely determined by John Coltrane, which makes it more vulnerable to the quicksand of influence. Lewis consistently and skillfully steers clear and delivers strong, well-shaped statements like Transfiguration.

At 40 years of age, tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, a jazz conservatory alumnus who garnered considerable acclaim for The Jesup Wagon (2021), has begun to question his own “trained intuition,” hoping to move beyond skill, habit and gratuitous complexity to explore deeper meanings of music-making. Transfiguration, his fourth quartet album for Intakt, with Aruán Ortiz (piano), Brad Jones (bass) and Chad Taylor (drums), is a promising step in this direction. The first thing to hit you is Lewis’ stentorian sound, an echo of tenor titans Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane or Albert Ayler, who could command attention with a single, richly reverberant note. Emotional gravitas from Lewis’ gospel background is here too, an ability to generate skin-prickling electricity. His tunes are hummable, harmony serving melody, not the other way ‘round. But the quality most responsible for taking this music “deeper” is cohesion, the kind of empathy and trust that allows the quartet to change its collective mindset at will or whim, to launch off on any promising new detours, following in each other’s footsteps even as they lead the way.
