Extended Technique, a joint product of the Classical and New Music departments, is dedicated to the elevation, exploration, and advancement of “contemporary” “classical” “music” as understood by WKCR programmers. This show challenges the binary distinction between the "classical" and "experimental" traditions as a dedicated space for the 20th-century avant-garde and “traditional contemporary classical" with an emphasis on the work of present-day composers and performers.

Man springt sofort mitten hinein, kopfüber und ohne Vorwarnung, in diese Liveaufnahme aus Kopenhagen. Erst nach dreieinhalb Minuten gibt es ein kurze Gelegenheit zur Orientierung. Mit präpariertem Klavier und scharfen Trompentönen geht es los, gefolgt von Drakslers typisch dichtem Spiel und eher weicheren Flächen von Santos Silva. Diese werden bald deutlich schärfer und die Tasten droniger. Es gibt keine Verschnaufpausen, und doch ist es alles andere als hektisch. Eher hochkonzentriert und mit der nötigen Mischung aus Zeit lassen und stets neue Sounds in den Ring werfen gespielt. Beide verfügen über eine sehr große Klangpalette. Präsentieren diese aber nicht bloß, sondern können so gekonnt aufeinander reagieren. Ein spannendes Beispiel für ein gut eingespieltes, frei improvisierendes Duo. Alles dabei, was es braucht, um abzuheben.

Having gained prominence for her composing and instrumental skills, Kaja Draksler continues to investigate diverse musical situations. Besides her own groups, the Slovenian pianist has integrated herself into other configurations, two of which are highlighted during these live fest8vak sets. When The Hills… is a single improvisation from the Nickelsdorf festival where Draksler played with two of Amsterdam’s most creative players, multi-reedist Ab Baars, ICP Orchestra member and guitarist Terrie Ex. Recorded at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Grow features a recent cultivation between the pianist and Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva, which has been flourishing for about 15 years.

Since Ex’s aggressive playing involves clanging and rubbing strings as well as flanges and twang; and Draksler often pummels the piano keys or scrapes the instrument’ internal string set there’s a need for a percussionist. Plus the highest as well as the lowest reed pitches are aptly projected from Baars’ tenor saxophone, clarinet and shakuhachi. This approach means that tumultuous sequences involve the reedist moving from upwards doits to clarion linearity to biting bellows in various combinations. Meanwhile Draksler counters his intonations with inventive textures that range from toy piano-like key sprinkles to key thumps that descend to pedal point emphasis. Meantime Ex challenges or decorates the expositions with string clangs or cuffs. By mid-point each partner’s contribution has hardened to maximum intensity with Baars’ multiphonic note clusters; Ex’s prominent string shakes and the pianist’s descending tones. While the narrative remains horizontal, it speeds up from andante to presto with galloping keyboard cascades, slurred fingering from the guitarist and reed shrieks that expose two notes at once. Slowing down to andante, aerophone-like reed peeps resonate against vibe-like single note pianism to radiate into a group conclusion.

Meanwhile on Grow, it’s Draksler’s piano key stopping and keyboard pressure which provides the bottom for the disc’s four connected improvisations. At the same time Silva’s half-valve slurs and triplet exploration bugle to crescendos that leave brass reverberations hanging in the air. Pushed still further on “Close” the adjoining broken octave expositions mean that formalist dabbling which with the pianist begins the program is quickly pushed away for keyboard patterning and equivalent implement juddering on the inner strings. Facing this the trumpeter’s output becomes even more discordant, matching gurgling portamento with strident squeaks and peeps. Finally Silva reaches a climax of air forced through the horn’s body tube without valve work. Prestissimo piano chording fills any space left in the narrative with a geyser of keyboard notes, harp-like glissandi from the inner strings and harsh raps against the instrument’s wood.. With hollow tube intonation and repeated smears the trumpeter introduces extended and condensed brass buzzes to the concluding title track, with the pianist’s response equally pressurized pedal point that is abruptly cut off as a single piano plink signals the ending.

Already acknowledged for her solo, and octet programs, with these sessions, Draksler prove once again that she can adapt to and amplify any configurations.

La pianiste slovène Kaja Draksler et la trompettiste portugaise Susana Santos Silva font partie de ces musiciennes les plus novatrices du jazz européen. Ouvertes à toutes sortes d’expérimentations dans le domaine de la musique improvisée, elles ont déjà un long et diversifié parcours derrière elles, que ce soit comme leader ou sidewoman (on se souviendra, par exemple, de l’album « The Detour Fish », enregistré live en 2014 par Susana Santos Silva avec De Beren Gieren). Ce « Grow », qui est leur deuxième album commun (« This love », leur premier, est paru en 2015), a été enregistré live au Festival de jazz de Copenhague (où réside principalement Kaja Draksler) en juillet 2021. Il s’agit de quatre compositions qui ne font en fait qu’une longue suite, un enregistrement on ne peut plus original, expérimental, abstrait, difficile d’accès de prime abord, où l’improvisation est de mise et qui est définitivement inclassable (ce qui n’est peut-être pas une mauvaise chose…). Est-ce du jazz ? De la musique classique contemporaine ? Peu importe finalement. Ce qui est certain, c’est que les couleurs proposées se veulent innovantes, proposant des voies rarement empruntées. Les musiciennes cherchent à donner à leurs instruments des sons les plus divers (de l’aigu du piano aux nombreuses transformations de la trompette, qui se fait tantôt grognement, tantôt douleur, voire cri). Cette musique requiert une attention extrême et une volonté d’accepter des contextes peu habituels. Sans quoi vous risquez de rejeter très rapidement ce disque, qui a justement le mérite de vouloir aller plus loin, d’expérimenter plus, de chercher de nouvelles directions.

De Sloveense pianiste Kaja Draksler, die overigens dertien jaar in Amsterdam bivakkeerde voordat ze onlangs besloot deels in Kopenhagen en deels in Trboje (Slovenië) te gaan wonen, is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een bijzonder eigenzinnige en creatieve pianiste. De titel 'In Otherness Oneself', die zij haar bij Unsounds verschenen soloalbum meegaf is dan ook goed gekozen. We horen haar ook in 'Grow', het album dat ze samen met de Portugese trompettiste Susana Santos Silva maakte voor Intakt. De twee zijn geenszins onbekenden voor elkaar. Ze werken regelmatig samen en maakte in 2015 al 'This Love'.

Over de titel van haar soloalbum die afkomstig is uit het gedicht 'Aquoueh R-Oyo' van Cecil Taylor, zegt Draksler zelf: "As a person who speaks and understands different languages, I have an impression that my identity is multifaceted, I have to lose something in myself in order to let the 'spirit' of a new language inside me. So in this way I am constantly becoming in otherness myself." Verder haalde Draksler voor dit album inspiratie uit voodoo en het gegeven dat de mens de muziek beïnvloedt, maar de muziek ook de mens. Ze verrast ons direct met 'Away!', waarin we allereerst Robert Frost zijn gedicht 'In The Clearing' horen voordragen, te midden waarvan we Draksler enige noten horen aanslaan. Om dit vrij lange stuk verderop op prachtige wijze verder uit te bouwen, waarbij hedendaags gecomponeerde muziek en vrije improvisatie gelijk opgaan. De tweede verrassing openbaart zich tegen het einde, als we de vocalisten Laura Polence en Björk Níelsdóttir horen, waar Draksler ook in haar octet mee samenwerkt.

'Downward And Inward' lijkt wat meer op de muziek die we van Draksler gewend zijn, balancerend tussen melodie en abstractie. Het eerder genoemde citaat betekent voor Draksler ook dat ze in ieder stuk een andere muzikale taal uitprobeert, met een heel wonderlijk resultaat in 'Prst, Roka, Laket', waar ze met kwarttonen werkt. 'Tenis Stołowy' bevat ook een gesproken tekst. We horen Witold Gombrowicz zijn gedicht 'Dzienniki' voorlezen. Hier integreert Draksler de gesproken woorden naadloos in haar pianospel.

Ook in 'Moonrise', de opener van 'Grow' blijkt de piano van Draksler geprepareerd. Hij klinkt meer als een klokkenspel dan als een piano. Het trompetspel van Santos Silva klinkt al even ongewoon in dit bijzonder abstracte en wat weerbarstige werkstuk. 'Close' vangt aan met een lang aangehouden trompetklank, voorzien van allerhande kleine schermutselingen. Langzaam dringt Draksler dit klankpalet binnen met een sterk repetitief patroon in het hoge register, een geluid dat veel weg heeft van rollende knikkers. En tegen het einde is de creativiteit grenzeloos en puren de twee dames de meest onverwachte en verontrustende geluiden uit hun instrumenten.

'Liquid Rock' bewijst dat het nog extremer kan; de lijnen die Santos Silva hier blaast doen je de haren te berge rijzen. Verderop verworden ze gecombineerd met strak ritmisch en overrompelend pianospel tot een boeiend geheel. In het titelstuk 'Grow' horen we Draksler percussieve klanken produceren, mogelijk onder de klep van haar piano. Of trommelt ze op het instrument? Het klinkt in ieder geval boeiend en vormt een mooi fundament voor de uiterst ingetogen noten die Santos Silva hier blaast. Verderop gooit ze haar klavier weer in de strijd voor een andermaal verontrustend duet. Het contrast is groot met het tweede deel: een prachtig microtonaal klanklandschap.

Within the first minute of the opening “Moonrise”, Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler and Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva have established themselves as the most compellingly weird improvising duo in contemporary music. Draksler is playing an erratic pattern on what sounds like a de-tuned toy piano. It’s somehow at once repetitious and varied with gong-like sounds interspersed. Santos Silva is creating a choked, quavering sound that seems less a trumpet than a strangling creature, possibly alien. Possibly alien? The first time I played this, things were suddenly going on and I was barely listening, not even half-listening, and I thought there was also a tape playing in the piece, a strangely alien, pitch-distorted tape of vocal music, some odd Asian opera accompanied by insistent quarter-tone keyboards, some interference pattern picked up from somewhere in the vast near-empty steppes available on globe-hopping internet radio (It used to work—today I’ve reached Nizhny Tagil, enthusiastic commercials in Russian and Fat Boy Slim’s “Rockefeller ****” from Fifa99). Heard again, repeatedly, “Moonrise” was still mysterious, but it’s trumpet and piano, prepared and miked.

'Grow', a 41-minute performance from the 2021 Copenhagen Jazz Festival, creates its own sonic world. To describe it as a duo seems like a disservice. There’s nothing particularly conversational about it, no sense of piano accompaniment, no dividing line between composed and improvised. Rather, its four segments are stages in a dream voyage, one compound mind creating complex, unified music at an exalted level with constantly shifting timbres. That opening “Moonrise” will turn to limpidly beautiful lyric trumpet amid cascading chromatic piano; the next stage, “Close”, will have circular-breathing, Morse-code trumpet with a refracted sub-text, the piano eventually revealing itself in crystalline high pitches with electronic echo and suggestions of glockenspiel and drum, the trumpet becoming the sound of rhythmic air, with what sounds like someone walking cautiously on piano strings.

“Liquid Rock” demonstrates the trumpet’s simultaneously empathetic relationship with mining equipment and rock, assuming a great industrial roar with overblown multiphonics, eventually matched with rapid, sustained, keyboard knitwork. The concluding title track moves through various transformations, including a passage of Harmon-muted trumpet that suggests Miles Davis and which is set against e-bowed piano string tones that sound like Draksler is sometimes employing an oscillator, at other times rustling through the contents of a kitchen miscellany drawer after having first transferred them to the piano’s interior.

No description can do more than suggest the depth and complexity of this cumulative work, in which extended techniques are not effects but organic methodologies plumbing new regions of meaning and expression.

Entre la Slovène résidant à Copenhague Kaja Draksler et la Portugaise vivant à Stockholm Susana Santos Silva, le courant passe. Mais nul besoin d’électricité puisque c’est acoustique qu’elles se produisirent au Copenhagen Jazz Festival le 7 juillet 2021.

Aimant à triturer-débusquer les sons (piano préparé, techniques étendues…), les deux musiciennes improvisatrices plongent dans l’obsession à cœur ouvert. Si la pianiste aime à creuser l’arpège jusqu’à l’usure, la trompettiste nous surprend à s’ouvrir à la mélodie. C’est ce que nous semble dire Moonrise, première plage du disque.

Mais, n’oubliant pas leur passé de baroudeuses, elles réintègrent rapidement les joyeux chemins de l’expérimentation. Modulation autour d’une même note, continuum du souffle, cordes frottées, objets bondissants sur ces mêmes cordes, les instruments, soudainement percussifs, s’ouvrent aux dialogues, s’accouplent en des chaos soniques élevés, débusquent ce qui n’était jamais apparu jusqu’ici, rugissent d’un cri d’outre-tombe avant de retrouver l’obsession originelle.

Jouant de clarté, de clair-obscur et surtout d’insistances quant aux matières, nos deux musiciennes explorent cette dernière avec un engagement non feint, exemplaire. Et cela est souvent magnifique.

One of the rising stars in the European creative music firmament, Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler (who celebrates her 36th birthday this month) covers a lot of ground both figuratively and literally. She crisscrosses the continent as part of the collective acclaimed trio Punkt. Vrt. Plastik, yet at the same time helms her own Octet, a genre-shredding ensemble which furnishes diverse settings for poetry texts. But she also explores more intimate terrain too, as evidenced by the two recent releases here.

On Grow, Draksler joins Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva in an enthralling duet. They already have one album together, This Love (Clean Feed, 2015), as well as appearing as part of the co-operative Hearth, but this time out, unlike those occasions, they dispense with charts entirely. That proves no obstacle to either simpatico music making or timbral variety, as they embark on a continuous 40-minute journey, diced into four tracks, in which both mode and direction constantly morph. Each is totally attuned to the moment, with the talent to ensure endlessly surprising results. Draksler makes extensive use of preparations and other implements to modify her instrument's sonic

signature, while Silva's tonal command and quicksilver imagination show just why she has been touring Europe with Anthony Braxton since lockdown eased. "Moonrise" flirts with the outskirts of melodicism, before bleeding into the gnarly exchanges of "Close", a magical realm in which Silva's multiphonic circular-breathed waves lap against Draksler's chimes and string shimmer. Unafraid of melody, Draksler introduces a throbbing undertow on "Liquid Rock" which, when she modulates, nudges Silva from white noise into elegiac fanfares, a feel which recurs after yet more extreme shenanigans on the title cut with an understated, soothing finale of stately piano chords and wavering trumpet blurts.

Draksler performs alone on In Otherness Oneself, her second solo outing. Well, almost alone, as she incorporates a playback of Robert Frost reciting his titular poem at the start of "Away!" which she accompanies in a reflective frame, gradually dissipating into dissonance, until the piece ends sampling the voices of Björk Níelsdóttir and Laura Polence from her Octet reprising the lyrics in aching song. Similarily on "Tenis Stołowy", she superimposes a chatty recitation by Polish author Witold Gombrowicz on correspondingly chatty and nimbly-stepping piano. On each track, Draksler chooses a specific sound world to remain within. "Downward & Inward" toggles between ostinato bursts and wafting romanticism, like a butterfly alternately surging and flitting, while in the final "Toward" she likewise contrasts two different approaches: dark bottom end set against treble rejoinders. Like Cory Smythe, whose supplementary MIDI keyboard setup inspired her, Draksler chafes at the piano's rigid tonality. Thus on "Prst, Roka, Laket" she enlists an electronic arpeggiator to give every note an astonishing trilling quality; vinegary microtonal shifts also color the more somber, halting "Pika" and the staccato "Stratonutki". The album represents a singular addition to an already rich and daring discography.

Als eine Keimzelle des Musikerinnen-Quartetts Hearth setzt dieses Duo seine Suche nach musikalischen Verwegenheiten fort. Furchtlos erschliessen Kaja Draksler und Susana Santos Silva ein klangliches Territorium, das sich auf einem Stück wie "Liquid Rock" noch am ehesten sehr physisch anhört, ansonsten aber Räume erschliesst, die mit einem hohen Abstraktionsgrad verdichtet sind. Die vier längeren Tracks, die im Juli 2021 live am Jazz-festival Kopenhagen aufgenommen wurden, veranschaulichen, wie weit entfernt von gängigen Kategorien die beiden Musikerinnen mit ihrer Klangsprache das Unerhörte entwickeln lassen. Draksler und Santos Silva verwandeln mit ihren erweiterten Spieltechniken ihre Instrumente in Soundmaschinen. Deren Herkunft und Charakter bleiben zwar immer erkennbar, gleichzeitig generieren sie mit Verfremdungen, Geräuschen, rhythmischen Akzenten und rätselhaften Texturen deren Klangspektrum auf oft abenteuerliche Weise. Was können Räume an Dimensionen freilegen, wenn sie so radikal angepeilt und ausgeleuchtet werden wie von diesem Duo? Die beiden spielen mit der Haltung der Aufrichtigkeit und mit viel Experimentierlust. Sie sind gleichzeitig expressiv und kontrolliert, sie wagen viel und lassen sich auch von "Industrial"-Turbulenzen ("Grow") nicht aus der Ruhe bringen. Kompositorisch im Moment bleiben sie auf der Fährte, die uns Hörende in Gefilde weitab des avantgardistischen Mainstreams führt.
