Fred Frith is a world renowned improvisor, composer and multiinstrumentalist who has positioned himself on the contemporary music scene between rock and jazz, improvisation and compostition. Experimental Saxophoneophonist and bass clarinetist Hans Koch has a similarly superb reputation. In the past few years Hans has dedicated himself to the quieter side of improvisation.

Both musicians have extended the possibilities of their instruments and stepped into new territories. The pair have known each other since the Nineties. As a guest, Frith took part in the “hardcore chamber music“ of trio Koch-Schütz-Studer.

On the new album “You Are Here” they create intriguing sound worlds and fascinating tone structures purely by improvising. It is the music of two mature masters who have worked all their life to develop their own musical language. The duo allows them to make full use of their artistic capability to the great pleasure of the listener.

Guitarist Fred Frith has always worked in the intersection of rock and jazz, and he's also guested on Koch-Schütz-Studer's "hardcore chamber music". Here he forms a duo with Hans Koch - on bass clarinet, and soprano and tenor saxophones. On this disc, Koch's recent predilection for the quieter side of improvisation is challenged by Frith's broiling feedback and brooding ambient sounds. On the opening "Just A Crack", subterranean drones offer an extreme contrast with avian tweetings from high soprano. In "Strange Is The Night Where Black Stars Rise", feedback potentiates the effects of tenor saxophone overtones.

Fred Frith, British experimental guitarist, has had 40-something years to sculpt the sonic landscape between there and here (wherever either lay). Though discerning ears have engaged 'noise' musicians over decades, Frith, also a composer, thrives on melody as much as restless utterances. It's been a fascinating career from Henry Cow and The Art Bears of the art rock circuit to Skeleton Key, The Golden Palominos, Material, Naked City and Massacre in old dirty Downtown. In his hands the electric guitar carries a malleable expressionist palette all its own. Likewise, Swiss Hans Koch's bass clarinet and various saxophones, performances throughout Europe since the '70s and later work with Butch Morris, Cecil Taylor, Andrew Cyrille, Shelley Hirsch and Barry Guy begat an expansive vision ideal for duos with the likes of Frith. A peculiarly Koch-ian side-arm is "spit" as credited on "You Are Here": he allows a buildup of saliva in the body of his instruments to morph into a new, growling sound source, most effective when paired with percussive slapping of the keys.

Recorded live in Basel, Switzerland, this album seems to be a statement of where Frith, perhaps the music itself, stands today. "That bird has flown and this one has arrived," the guitarist writes in liner notes filled with only slightly mysterious allusions to his past projects. The seven improvised works here are fresh, aloft with gentle and introspective excitement. "Strange is the Night Where Black Stars Rise" evokes darkness with the snap and click on the low end of bass clarinet growing into gradual dynamic shifts. Frith casts a stellar effect over the loneliness of Koch's phrases, with noir and sci-fi imagery tenderly fighting for space. But while there is plenty of sound manipulation to go around ("Road, Mirror, Forest, Sea" is a prime example), "Lots Out Large" calls on the spirit of Eric Dolphy with its guttural almost blue melody. ****, Frith's rhythmic whirlwind can make you believe that the ghost of Rashied Ali came a-haunting too.

Touching Extremes

Such is the amount and assortment of projects and biographic highlights provided by Fred Frith and Hans Koch that it is virtually impossible to keep the pace with their ceaseless appearances. Then again, do we really still need to talk about leading figures of the last 50 years or so? The answer is affirmative when we stumble upon an album that does not exactly obey to the expectations linked to the musician’s personality. You Are Here is that type of release.

For the occasion, the duo pursued a balance between the realm of shade and blur and the more in-your-face aspects of offhand manifestation. Their interplay is fluid and articulate, with rare openings to (controlled) discord. The listener is let in without obstacles; the sonority is never distressing, including the sections introducing a measure of agitation (case in point, “Immagine Prima”).

Some episodes are surprisingly quiet, characterized as they are by faraway reverberations and shifting densities. The aptly titled “Strange Is The Night Where Black Stars Rise” is an enticing example, based as it is on tenuous resonance rather than depiction of actual shapes. Other instances of “stimulating quietness” are to be found in “Road, Mirror, Forrest, Sea”, notwithstanding an increased tendency to arrhythmic phenomena and pronounced dynamic reversals.

Perhaps the most riveting aspect of this collection is represented by Frith and Koch’s ability in maintaining their personalities in sight in contexts where the music’s physiognomy is not that definite. The acoustic aura that surrounds the spontaneous interaction remains perceptible from a piece to the next in spite of evident gestural discrepancies.

Nothing else then but a strong recommendation – also to loyal disciples – to listen scrupulously to a record that justifies the worn-out adage “there’s more than meets the ears”. It is not a given that renowned artists produce valuable work every time they meet. But this time they truly did.

Dva neuvěřitelní matadoři, Intaktem forzírovaní – Fred Frith s elektrickou kytarou a rozličnými drobnými objekty jako s nepostradatelným přívažkem a Hans Koch s basklarinetem, sopránkou a tenorem i s rožněm(?) – korunují tuto várku s titulem You Are Here, nahraným 23. a 24. dubna 2016 v baselském Jazz Campu. Ten titul je přesný: jsme tady, jsme přitom, jsme od prvního do posledního tónu vtaženi do dění, plného neočekávanosti. Tou slyne okamžitě vyšprajcovávaná a vyšmajchlovávaná Just a Crack, vyvolávaná, co vyvolávaná: vyždímávaná s nejrůznějšími šarádami, šarapatkami, ozvěnkami. Oba proslulí koumáci vyhlubinovávají halabalování jako stavební prvek, vydusávají do chuchvalcování, vyklusávají do zadrchávání, propíraného s hromobitím a probleskováním (na časy) až do rozštěpnosti. Včetně kakofonie? Co je to kakofonie, jaká částečka z ní zbývá v tomto žížení? Jako úderem nastoupí oba do zatajemněné Strange Is the Night Where Black Stars Rise a vpádí do ažfabrického rozhrčení, prodernostního vyburcovávání, vyvíravého výhrůžnění, ale také (vzápětí) do ťupťání, matnění, pučení a zádešnění. Jde totiž o prostocvičné piskoření, hamťavě rozcvrčkované a harampádivě vysoukávané do nivočivého divočení se vzestupným výbušněním a blouznivým svévolničením, jež zakrojí zavírkování. Úderová odbíjená ohlásí Lots Out Large, demolivě protěkávané, pokoutně zatípávané a odpadově zatékavé. Je prodoutnávaně dýmnicové i vyjíždivě zrychlíkované. Když se pak vydřípne Immagine Prima, je rozharcováno do poblázněného rozhrn(c)ování a rozkvokané žadonivosti. Road, Mirror, Forest, Sea pak nabídne spojité nádoby podhlučnění a nadhlučnění, v kterémžto drnčivostním hrdlení probíhá útěkové pelášení i zarochávané pelíškování.

At the vanguard of the 1980s downtown movement, Frith's imaginative guitar treatments still sound fresh here as he merges with the Swiss reedsman Koch's extended sonics in a raw, urban yet austere free-improv setting.

Natty Bumppos both, Fred Frith and Hans Koch were pioneers on their respective instruments in the realm of free improvisation who have seen firsthand the changes decades have wrought on the idiom. Like the hero of James Fennimore Cooper’s Leatherstocking Saga the career longevity of Frith and Koch has sometimes led to them being forgotten or passed over for younger facsimiles. Neither is the sort to go congenially into obscurity and both have pushed back through reliably expanding discographies over the years. You Are Here is an excellent placeholder of their partnership and felicitous reminder for listeners of their present creative improvised music coordinates.

Recorded on a spring day in Basel, Switzerland last year the seven free improvisations are recalcitrant and uncompromising from the jump. Koch jockeys between bass clarinet, soprano and tenor saxophones and there’s good reason why the fourth instrumental entry next to his name is “spit”. Viscous rivulets of saliva pass back and forth regularly through the mouthpiece and tubes of his implements adding glottal and sibilant accents to the alien reed-borne creations. Frith is similarly ruthless on his guitar, affixing it with various preparations and only rarely playing it with anything resembling conventionality.

“Just a Crack” features oscillating drones conjured on amplified strings and avian soprano with form arising fleetingly in favor of an overarching aqueous presence. The specific dimensions of the performance space are a mystery, but Frith fills them with vast clouds of rumbling sound. “Strange Is the Night Where Black Stars Rise” echoes the ominousness of its title as slabs of angry feedback collide and converge with the distortions of booming tenor overtones. Even when moving together at volumes that amount to a collective murmur, Frith and Koch bring the ambient existential menace.

Percussive reed plosives open “Exercises Chronologiques” with answers from Frith’s metallic scrapes and percolating investigations with amplification. Koch carves out an increasingly frenetic corner on tenor as his colleague hammers away on the body of a guitar. A weird reverie ensues with Frith playing an almost-melody, dipped in dulcet electricity the nimbus of an underlying drone audible around the edges. Koch engineers a Doppler reed whistle in response, scraping the limit of sensory perception. The sonorous mirage is summarily shattered in a cascade of intemperate dissonance.

“Lots Out Large” finds Koch’s bass clarinet navigating a floating firmament of percussive ephemera, fragments of quixotically tuneful phrasing interspersing with serrated reed slurs and piercing peals of noise. Frith moves between similar extremes, thumping out a tumbling rhythm alongside Koch’s ululations. Audience-oriented amenities appear but an afterthought in these sorts of heated and headlong exchanges with both players trusting that anyone signing on for the ride will be willing to forgo assumptions in favor of the attendant rewards attainable in wherever the pair undergo. It’s an unspoken, unwritten compact, but one that’s been a reliable bargain throughout their careers just as it remains here.

Gerade hinsetzen. Nicht zu bequem. Jetzt vielleicht noch die Augen schließen. Bingo: „You Are Here."
