LES DIABOLIQUES: A jamboree of skits and mini operas on love, collapsing marriages (including that royal one) politics and rejection from three of Europe's finest improvisers. Pianist Schweizer and bassist Léandre seem to have digested the last century's worth of jazz and classical traditions between them, yet their handling of them combines studious reverence with a freshness and humour you can almost reach out and touch. Nicols is in familiar company here and uses that air of friendly assurance to stretch herself even further. She has never recorded better - it's not just her four octave range which impresses; nor is it her ability to take the seemingly ordinary and find the extraordinary within it (and there's certainly plenty of that going on here): it's the way she articulates the processes of improvisation through song that makes this music so accessible. Highly recommended.
