Saxophonist Tony Malaby has been a hard-hitting presence on the NYC scene for more than a quarter of a century. Although an MVP whose unique sound elevates any bandstand he graces, as shown with the likes of Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band and the Fred Hersch Quintet, he's also an established leader. But while a fearsome improviser whose own albums often swerve to left field, he remains a wholly committed interpreter of other people's concepts, as he shows on the three dates here.

On As Things Do, Malaby finds himself among a crew of peers. It's the second outing from bassist Michael Formanek's all-star Elusion Quartet, completed by drummer Ches Smith and another of the reedman's regular collaborators, pianist Kris Davis. Formanek's formidable scope as a composer ensures he utilizes all the considerable talents at his disposal, mixing intricate parts in often multifaceted charts that offer diverse improvisatory spaces, which are exploited to the full. Malaby certainly enjoys himself on the audacious opener "Bury the Lede", as his tenor soars above a juddering churn that progressively resolves anthemic. Far more than just a fire breather, the saxophonist demonstrates his breadth, all grizzled elegance navigating the shifting meters of "Rewind", then invoking flute-like tones on soprano to accompany Davis' gamelan-inflected piano preparations and Smith's chiming vibes early on in "Cracked Bells", while his playing is lyrically aching on the valedictory "Gone Home". Each track represents a journey into its own world in which nothing can be anticipated other than that excellence awaits.

Malaby guests on Another State of Rhythm, the third release under the banner Old Mountain by the Portuguese pairing of pianist Pedro Branco and drummer João Sousa, who add twin bassists João Hasselberg and Hernâni Faustino to the cast for nine selections. The saxophonist proves well-suited to the outfit's canny blend of "out" there with more inside heartfelt pieces. He shines on the sole cover, a rendition of the offbeat C&W stroll through Leadbelly's blues classic, "Goodnight, Irene": first Branco and then Malaby gradually go off the rails, culminating in a final madcap duet. Thereafter, the saxophonist ranges from tender and delicately keening on the wistful "The Sixth Commandment", to abrasive and raw on the seething "Giraldo". He doesn't appear at all on the hymn-like "Ballad For Paul", a lovely tribute to his erstwhile employer Motian, although his breathy embroidery of the subsequent "Blend in By Standing Out" seems to capture the same spirit.

Malaby joins Madrid-born, NYC-based Álvaro Torres to realize six of the pianist's originals on Live in Barcelona. He's part of Torres' dream team, which also includes Japanese expat bassist Masa Kamaguchi and Danish drummer Kresten Osgood. Torres' compositions pull in influences from post-bop to Spanish folklore, but always remain direct and accessible, with a swinging core. Partly that's down to the leader's strong sense of time, and partly down to the engine room where Osgood brings an irrepressible drive allied to sensitive imagination, all
spiced by just a hint of mischief, alongside the nimble-fingered Kamaguchi. Malaby thrives in the cracks, offering impassioned flourishes to the Monk-tinged "Siresimi", and swaggering through the changes of the involved "You Dig?". The compositional fabric of the standout "The Good Life" barely contains his nerve-shredding squeals and expressive skronk.

Nouveauté. Passé l'orage du titre d'ouverture (Bury The Lede), dont les bourrasques sont traversées de lumineux traits de pur lyrisme, les cheminements tortueux de Rewind semblent exposés et réexposés en tous sens comme quelqu'un qui tournerait en rond égaré dans une forêt, mais débouchent sur un swing paisible où Tony Malaby et Kris Davis semblent chez eux. Si ce n'est pas le seul contraste stylistique caractérisant cet album, de puissants rhizomes en préservent la cohérence. Ils tiennent aux domaines du jazz d'où ces musiciens ont tiré leur expérience, et apparaissent à la faveur d'une tournure stylistique commune à plusieurs morceaux, ou dans la façon dont l'ostinato de piano de In Turn s'immisce dans le thème de Rockaway Beach. S'ils savent jouer sur le velours de la ballade ou s'abandonner à d'apparents égarements, au tintinnabulement et à l'affolement collectif sur Cracked Bells, ces musiciens toujours ardents savent attiser
d'intenses brasiers "free". Tel est le Grand Jazz de ce contrebassiste et compositeur qui fit son entrée dans les discographies en 1976-77 auprès de Dave Liebman, Art Pepper et Chet Baker. "Un jazz agrandi" pour reprendre la formule d'André Hodeir qui se refusait à en sortir mais s'interdisait de le faire tourner en rond.

Ronduit fantastische plaat van bassist Michael Formanek, die in de jaren '70 en '80 speelde bij o.m. Tony Williams, Stan Getz en Fred Hersch, maar de voorbije decennia is uitgegroeid tot een gerespecteerde sideman (bij o.m. Tim Berne, Mary Halvorson en Susan Alcorn) én bandleider in de avant-garde-flank van de moderne jazz. Op dit tweede album van zijn Elusion Quartet is hij opnieuw te horen met muzikanten die stuk voor stuk behoren tot de frontlinie van het Amerikaanse avontuur. De muziek swingt (Rewind), zwelt aan tot majestueuze proporties (opener Bury The Lede, met een machtig gierende Tony Malaby), verleidt met sensualiteit (Rockaway Beach) en verklankt unheimliche dromen (Gone Home, Cracked Bells).

With his membership of the fine collaborative trio Thumbscrew as well as string of leader gigs in various configurations for ECM, double bassist Michael Formanek can lay rightful claim to notable status in contemporary improvised music. He has long made music in which form is strongly defined without confining his bands and this new offering by his Elusion Quartet, a supergroup of sorts, given that each member is also a well established composer-leader, builds strongly on its impressive 2018 debut Time Like This.

Leaning to the avant-garde without falling into all-out free improvisation, this is a small group with not so much a big sound as a great ability to move from small to big and back again, in terms of attack and energy, with the players holding down sensitively and letting out ferociously with no disjuncture.

Highlights include 'Bury The Lede, a barbed rock requiem in which saxophonist Tony Malaby splits tones to shatter glass while the other players move with both stealth and strength. 'Cracked Bells' is an even more beguiling suite that starts with a misty, temple-like ambiance created by Ches Smith's gamelanish before progressing througı. yearning melodic episodes, complete with concise but effective motifs from Formanek and some wonderfully blurry tremelo chords from pianist Kris Davis prior to the whole band settling into a creeping wayward march on the coda.

Intelligent and impactful music that has a pleasingly wide range of light and shade.

Ce qui marque d’abord, à l’écoute de ce nouvel album de Michael Formanek, c’est la constance. Le contrebassiste mène depuis des années une barque discrète au premier abord, mais qui s’affirme parmi les mécaniques les plus précises de sa génération. On se souvient qu’en 2019, lorsque Formanek avait présenté son Elusion Quartet, l’impression était à l’exploration de l’infiniment petit ; avec la même équipe, et notamment un Tony Malaby de feu, on perçoit dès « Bury The Lede » que les choses ont grossi : le saxophone est colérique, impétueux, le piano de Kris Davis est une percussion supplémentaire qui vient compléter l’arsenal de Ches Smith. Ce qui est en jeu dans ce As Things Do, c’est une forme d’entropie. De vivacité jamais démentie.

Ce n’est pourtant pas l’énergie de front qui caractérise tout cet album paru chez Intakt Records. Avec le très doux « Cracked Bells » par exemple, où la pianiste montre plus de douceur dans un toucher de plume, le dialogue avec les pizzicati de Formanek crée une tout autre atmosphère, dont il reste un point commun, celui de la liberté. Dans ces conditions, Malaby passé au soprano offre lui aussi un autre visage. Il y a dans ce morceau une approche qui se réclame de la musique écrite occidentale ; même Ches Smith, plus percussionniste que jamais, offre toutes sortes de ponctuations qui se complexifient à mesure que le morceau avance, donnant à Kris Davis toutes les raisons de durcir son propos. La relation entre le batteur et la pianiste est vraiment au cœur de ce quartet, notamment lorsque Smith utilise son vibraphone, comme pour mieux jouer à cache-cache avec la pianiste.

Disque d’une grande richesse, As Things Do est vraiment à l’image de son leader. Sur le bien nommé « Entropy », puisque c’est le thème et le mode d’action de ce disque, Formanek s’offre une introduction magnifique, toute d’autorité et de parcimonie. La discrétion dont il fait preuve ne nuit pas à sa présence de chaque instant : dans une formule très libre, Formanek accompagne, souligne, induit. Il offre les conditions idéales à de magnifiques solistes qui s’engagent dans son sillage. Un disque d’une grande délicatesse.

Secondo lavoro per questo quartetto stellare, a seguire "Time Like This" del 2018.
Formanek non ha bisogno di presentazioni per chi segue le vicende di certo jazz e conferma la sua statura in questo ottimo lavoro, accompagnato nuovamente da Tony Malaby (sax tenore e soprano), Kris Davis (pianoforte) e Ches Smith(batteria e vibrafono). Le composizioni del contrabbassista sono affilate e ariose al tempo stesso e già dall'incipit free spiritual di Bury The Lede appare chiaro che siamo di fronte a un grande disco. Traboccante idee, ritmi sghembi, ombre di Mingus (Rewind), denso di soluzioni impreviste (In Turn), di swing angolare (Rockaway Beach), di un lirismo affilato, chirurgico (Cracked Bells). Spannend und wohltuend

Vom Eröffnungsstück mit seiner hymnischen Intensität sollte man sich nicht täuschen lassen. Diese Band bringt noch ganz andere Expressionen ins Spiel. Das Album des US-Bassisten und -Komponisten Michael Formanek mit Saxer Tony Malaby, Pianistin Kris Davis und Drummer Ches Smith besticht durch sein Spektrum und die herausragenden Interaktionen. Zeitgenössischer Jazz ist oft energetisch, aber nicht immer derart spannend und wohltuend.
